The Census Bureau completed its most recent decennial survey in 2020 and has provided estimated updates for some categories in the years since then.

The population estimate was 14,512 as of July 2022, the most recent figure posted on the Census Bureau’s web site. That was down slightly from two years prior when the 2020 census calculated it as 14,636. The 2010 census for Middlesex was 13,635.

The median Middlesex household income as of 2021 was estimated at $90,162. That is substantially higher than the national median household income of $70,784. The borough’s per capita income in 2021 was $42,159.

The poverty level in MIddlesex was 7.7%, lower than the national figure of 11.5% as of 2022.

Owner-occupied housing accounted for 74.4% of all Middlesex residential units as of 2021. The median value of an owner-occupied home was $333,200. 

The selected monthly costs for borough homeowners with a mortgage were estimated to average $2,448 in 2021. The Census Bureau calculates selected monthly costs by totaling payments for mortgages, deeds of trust, contracts to purchase, or similar debts on the property (including payments for the first mortgage, second mortgages, home equity loans, and other junior mortgages); real estate taxes; fire, hazard, and flood insurance on the property; and utilities (electricity, gas, and water and sewer); and fuels (oil, coal, kerosene, wood).

Middlesex had 5,459 households as of two years ago, with an average of 2.65 persons per household. Borough residents tend to be fairly well connected in terms of technology, with 93.6% having a broadband internet hookup.

Among residents 25 years of age and older, 90.3% were a high school graduate of higher.  Among the same age group, 29.1% held a bachelor’s degree or higher.

Persons under 5 years of age made up 5.4% of the borough population. Persons under age 18 accounted for 22.4%. People age 65 and older were 15.7%.
